Men can experience pregnancy-like symptoms—known as Couvade syndrome or sympathetic pregnancy—including nausea, weight gain, food cravings, abdominal pain, mood swings, and fatigue. Affecting 10% to over 80% of expectant partners, these symptoms often start in the first trimester, subside, and may return in the third. [1, 2, 3, 4]
Common Symptoms of Male Pregnancy (Couvade Syndrome) Symptoms can be both physical and psychological, often mimicking the pregnant partner:
Physical: Nausea/vomiting, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation, diarrhea, food cravings, appetite changes, weight gain, fatigue, toothaches, headaches, backaches, and leg cramps.
Psychological/Emotional: Mood swings, anxiety, depression, irritability, reduced libido, and difficulty sleeping. [2, 4, 5, 6, 7]
Causes and Timing
When: Symptoms typically begin in the first trimester, often diminish during the second, and may return in the third.
Why: While not a medically recognized mental disorder, it is linked to stress, empathy, and hormonal shifts, such as decreased testosterone and cortisol, or increased prolactin.
Why: It is believed to be a psychological reaction to the stress of becoming a parent or an, at times, unconscious rivalry with the fetus. [4, 5, 8, 9, 10]
Management
Treatments are not standard, but managing stress, resting, and addressing digestive issues through diet (e.g., probiotics) can help. The condition is generally considered a temporary, sympathetic response that passes after the baby is born. [4, 11]
